How to Use the Second Grade Common Core Workbook
Look at this workbook for 2nd grade. It’s 599 pages! That’s like an epic novel, only… not… epic? Well, actually it is kind of epic. We battle through the ELA standards with activities and worksheets in all the Literature and Informational Text standards. Then, we strike off toward the Reading Foundational Skills. That is a brief pitstop before turning our attentions toward Writing and then Speaking & Listening. Finally, we end our epic quest at Language, where we battle the evils of grammar and other fun stuff of the sort!
Oh, yeah. We’ve got the sequel ready, too. It’s the Math standards. Your quest begins this time in the lonely village of Operations and it’s nearby suburb Algebraic Thinking. From those humble beginnings, you head out into the uncharted lands of Numbers & Operations in Base Ten. What’s next for our young hero/heroine? Why, it’s Measurement & Data, everyone’s favorite math topics. After such a hefty chore, we end on the easier topic of Geometry.
Are you ready for this adventure? Remember, we have created at least 2 worksheets and 1 small group or center activity in each of the standards in these headings. Yes, it’s a great deal of work and effort, but it is for an entire year.

How to Use the First Grade Common Core Workbook
Wow, another large workbook I have to sort through to find the few useable tidbits for my classroom. Is that what you’re thinking? Well, naysayer, I beg to differ. You have hundreds of pages, nearly 600 actually, of worksheets and activities that are useful in Kagan Classrooms, in centers-remediation, in small group settings, or for whole classrooms. You also have tons of graphic organizers, writing papers, and open-ended worksheets that can be used in any classroom in any teaching style. We worked hard to make things that had reusability and flexibility, and each resource is crafted to fit the common core standards in math and ELA in the grade level you are buying.

How to Use the Kindergarten Common Core Workbook
So we’re selling this wonderful, very extensive workbook, but how do you sort through nearly 650 pages and figure out how to use it, right? Isn’t that what you’re wondering? I mean, what stops this from going on the shelf or in a file folder somewhere like all those other things you are given to use as a resource? It’s a very good question, because even at a reasonable $39 for a download, no one likes to waste money. Here’s how I might suggest you use it:
If you have a district academic plan that requires you to teach certain standards each week, use our searchable index in the front of the workbook. With a mouseclick, you move to the activities and worksheets designed to help teach that standard. Each standard has at least one center and at least 2 worksheets.
If you have a textbook you have to follow, look at the standards being taught in those lessons. Match the standard numbers to the worksheets and resources we offer in our workbook. Print or use them on a whiteboard.
If you have set standards you must follow per week or unit, that’s even easier. Again, just match the numbers and codes up, and you’re ready to go!

What is Common Core?
The Common Core Standards can be confusing, frustrating, and stressful for teachers, parents, and even the kids. Nearly every state in the country is adopting the common core standards in one fashion or another, but what is common core really?
Common Core is a set of standards designed to make sure that students are receiving a similar education no matter where they live. Previously, certain skills might be taught in one state at different grade level than in another. Students who move from city to city, county to county, or state to state might all be at very different levels because of what was taught and when it was taught! This made for a very uneven testing field.
To combat this, most every state has adapted a common group of core skills that students should learn at age and developmentally-appropriate grade levels. So, a student that lives in one state should be learning similar materials, if perhaps in a different method, than one living in another state. This still leaves room for teacher creativity and regional differences, but the same basic concepts are taught universally.

You know, common core does not have to be scary and painful for either teachers or students. If we understand the standards and how they are broken apart, we can attack each piece with fun and exciting ideas. Often, we will find that this is not NEW stuff, but rather a reorganized way to look at what we have already been teaching in years past. Your personal challenge for today (or this week, month, or year…) is to take each of these domains, look at them, and think about your favorite activity that fits into each one. If you can’t think of anything, ask a peer! Then, find lots of other ideas in our common core workbooks.
