Common Core Resources for Homeschool
Every school in the nation, or nearly every state and district, is in one way, shape, or form switching to common core. Some states are doing their own version, but nearly all states have adopted the national standards. What does that mean for homeschooled students? Since most homeschool students still have to take some state assessments, and since those assessments will be soon – if they are not already – aligned to the new national standards instead of old state standards, what is being taught at home might not be adequate anymore. Students might take those state tests and be unprepared for them. The changes might not seem too deep on the surface, but they have reexamined and realigned the way in which students learn, especially the WHEN part of that equation, even if teachers still have some freedom as to the HOW.
Our common core standards workbooks fit into any program. Some might use it as a supplement or as additional practice, but it also works for remediation, or as a core educational material to be supplemented with homeschool lessons and research projects. Take a look at our free samples to see if what we have fits with your homeschool student’s learning.

How to Use the Fifth Grade Common Core Workbook
This 5th grade book is, by a little bit, our largest one. It clocks in at over 900 pages. This is partially because the older students need more engaging activities and more involved resources. We have some serious games in this book that can make for great centers or even whole-class reviews and nice filler activities for 15-45 minutes here and there on those weird schedule days. Yes, we know you’ll use some of these activities during your core instruction or for supplementation, but how about some games for the whole class? Those 5th graders get competitive! How about breaking the class into teams or having some group challenges for some of this?
For Language:
- Flip-A-Chip: We have some activities on matching idioms to their meanings that could easily be a great team challenge. This activity has 2 modes to help teach figurative language and vocabulary.
- Ping Pong: The teams match multiple meaning words or test themselves on new vocabulary
- Tweeter: Students practice adding details and summarizing in this cute version of the popular online messaging site.
- Research & Report: ready-made multi-subject cards help you set up some team or individual research projects
- Scrabble: A spelling game like the popular board game but with 5th grade vocab words
- Are you Smarter than a 5th grader?: challenge your own 5th graders with these multi-subject question and answer cards
For Math:
- Graphing Patterns: Use X/Y in/out boxes to have teams graph lines
- Dancing Decimals: practice exponents, decimal places, and place value with this game
- Round and Round: Practice rounding numbers to the nearest whole number, tenth, or hundredth
- Monster Mingo: a multiplication bingo game!
- Risk!: A division board game
- It’s PBJ Time!: Practice your fractions with this game!
And this is just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Don’t forget we have an activity for EVERY language and math standard, as well as graphic organizers, worksheets, and other resources that support learning those standards.

How to Use the Fourth Grade Common Core Workbook
So you’re a pro at using all those ELA resources, but the math stuff sort of scares you – or overwhelms. Having taught math, I know how hard it can be to squeeze activities and centers into a lessons when NO ONE seems to be getting it. Right?
The cool thing about most of the centers activities in the math section, is that they can be used to preload a lot of materials or as a review. They work great at the same time as the textbook lessons as well, but I like yanking them back out right before unit tests, or as a surprise review of what we learned a month ago – things that students think are safe to forget now!
Take for example the activity for 5.OA.1, a standard that says: “Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.” This basically says that students should know their fact families and how factors work in teams to make products, right?
The activity for this standard has students matching word problems to pictures to products to multiplication sentences. It’s a 4-way match. It helps visualize the idea of multiplication and the matching between concrete and abstract must occur. Afterward, the worksheet that goes with this activity gives you something you can use for a grade or just as a check for understanding.
The two supporting worksheets that go with this standard have students drawing pictures, like 3 sets of 5 or 5 sets of 3 to illustrate a multiplication problem like 5×3=15. They also have to write word problems out in words, relating the fact families into written sentences. These are great for review, for a grade, as a pop quiz, or just about anything you want.
The beauty of having so many standards is that you could have a day where 3 teams work on a random standard, and you work with the ones who need it most. Keeping the groups organic and changing, you could remediate after a test, while not holding back those who do actually understand.

How to Use the Third Grade Common Core Workbook
So how would a sample lesson look with our workbook? Well, there are a lot of ways to approach using our materials, depending on the strength and types of your core resources, but let’s look at our workbook as a supplement for this example.
Let’s say this week your language lessons focus on RL.3.1, a standard that says: “Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.” That’s a pretty dry way of saying that students can answer questions from text and use details from the text to get those answers, right?
This lesson might span a week, being combined with other complementary and similar standards. So, while you have one group working on some sort of reading exercise, you might pull a third of your class or a quarter of your class for a small group center. The center we have provided with this standard is called Find it in the Text. In it, we have a short story called Found Money. After reading the story, perhaps underlining during and doing pre-reading strategies prior to reading, there is a worksheet organizer with 6 questions. Each question must be answered, and a detail from the text that proves that answer must be provided. There is a blank page in the same format that allows the teacher to adapt this strategy to ANY text, like a complementary story in the textbook.
Other students could be working on the worksheets that go with this standard. There are two short stories, each half a page at grade level. There are several questions that use the same idea, requiring evidence and proof from the text to prove an answer. This might be a pre-test, post-test. It might be part of a centers rotation to work in small groups, pairs, or independently. All of these exercises are about 20-30 minutes. They can be repeated, reviewed, and directly support the learning of the standard.
This kind of lesson pattern could be repeated for each of the about 40 ELA standards, and each of the about 25 math standards in grade 3, because there are similar materials for EACH of those standards in our workbook.
